Founded in 1942, Hasland Dance Studios (HDS) in Herne Bay is one of Kent’s longest running and best- known dance schools. Voted the 2015 ‘Dance School of the Year’ by the Dance Teacher Hub Awards which covers the whole of the UK, Gold Award winners of the Anne Walker Dance School of the Year Awards 2017 and Finalists in 2018 from entries across the UK and Europe, we are also one of a very small number of Kent dance schools to be accredited with ‘Recognised School Status’ by the Council of Dance Education and Training; reflecting our high standards of dance education as well as our commitment to the welfare of our students. With a highly qualified teaching staff, including industry professionals from the world of Musical Theatre and the Royal and English National Ballet companies, we are nevertheless able to offer classes at very competitive rates – from £2.75 per 30-minute class – with discounts available for siblings and students who attend multiple classes
Our students have qualified for the 3rd successive year for the Dance World Cup Finals, representing Team England, and in 2017 our Street crew came 4th in the World! We are sending another crew to Portugal this year and thank Redrow Homes for their sponsorship of our Team England kit and CCC for their grant towards our travel costs.
HDS students have also been very successful at local, regional, national and international competitions with winners of the Star Tap Challenge and Janet Cram Modern Awards competitions which are both elite national events.
We believe that every child deserves the chance to dance!
With classes from toddlers who are just walking right through to adults, we offer Ballet, Modern, Tap, Contemporary, Jazz, Street, Acrodance and Musical Theatre so we have something to suit everyone.
Our youngest students are our ‘Tiny Toes’ class which is on a Monday morning from 10-11am. It is open to all children who are just walking and with lots of space in our largest studio, is great fun with dancing and singing alongside play equipment; with room for parents to enjoy watching their children develop their musicality and social skills. At 3, the students move up to Saturday morning classes – Nursery Ballet, Pre-Primary Ballet and Tap.
As well as classes for our youngest students, Street and Musical Theatre are on Saturdays with all other classes from primary through to the advanced vocational levels on week day after-school afternoons and evenings.
We do run Adult Tap classes, with Tap-For-All on a Wednesday on a £3 pay-as-you-go basis which is open to complete beginners (we can lend tap shoes) and tapers with some experience and an advanced adult class on a Thursday with termly paid fees.
Preparation for professional training
For vocational students wishing to go on to a career in the performance industry, we have specialist training to help prepare for auditions, including advice on which schools/colleges to apply for as suitable for each applicant. We are incredibly proud of our many students who have gone on to train at top schools and become professionals. Jack Mitchell, who is currently touring with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures in ‘Swan Lake’, trained at HDS and many other ex-students have gone on to enjoy successful careers.
The Anna Morgan Teacher Training College also runs from Hasland Dance Studios.
